Peru’s best-known hike visited by thousands of tourists every year. This still thrilling 2-day program covers a 12-km Inca Trail, joining the classical 4-day route at the impressive archaeological site of Wiñaywayna, continuing through the famous Inti Punku or Sun Gate, and finally devoting the second day to a full day visit of the world-famous Inca citadel of Machupicchu. This program is recommended for those having less time or those looking to hike a shorter version of the Inca Trail without camping.

Day 1: Cusco –Short Inca Trail km104 – Chachabamba – Wiñay Wayna – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes

Pick up from Cusco or Sacred Valley.

We will pick you up from your hotel very early in the morning and drive to the Poroy train station or Ollantaytambo train station to board the train to Chachabamba at Km 104.  Here we will walk to the check point to present our permits and passports. Then we start our fabulous walk around the Vilcanota River (Urubamba River) to visit one of the Inca archeological sites of Chachabamba that was discovered in 1940 – almost thirty years after Hiram Bingham rediscovered Machu Picchu.  The triangular walls showed that they were once houses with thatched roofs believed to be a sacred site. Afterwards, we will continue with a gradual climb walking on Inca steps for about 3 to 4 hours until we reach the cloud forest.  We will walk through lush vegetation until reaching the meadows. Thereafter, we hike to Wiñay Wayna (“forever young”, 2,650mt-8,692ft). WiñayWayna was an important administrative and agricultural center for the Incas. Enjoy a box lunch here whilst taking in the lovely views of the many terraces. After lunch we will continue hiking towards the cloud forest until we reach the Sungate (Inti Punku) to catch stunning vistas of Machu Picchu below. You will have plenty of time for pictures before walking down to Machu Picchu (2,400mt- 7,874ft). We will take a side trail to take the bus down to Aguas Calientes to spend the night in a comfortable hotel.
