We will visit a home to see a weaving demonstration of the traditional textile arts using natural dyes. Afterwards, we will continue driving on a flat road through the fertile Sacred Valley formed by the Urubamba River surrounded by spectacular mountains. We will drive on a dirt road up to Moray located in a high plateau at about 3500mt. /11,500 ft.) and just west of the village of Maras located below. These are the most stunning agricultural circles which are in a large bowl depression with many terraces resembling an ancient Greek amphitheater. This archeological site is believed (in theory) to have been used by the Incas as an agricultural experiment center. One of the most notable features is the extensive difference in temperature that exists between the top and the bottom of the structure which can be as much as 15°C.  This vast temperature difference created micro climates, similar to what is achieved in greenhouses in modern times that was possibly used by the Inca to study the effects of different climatic conditions on crops. The plants were supposedly taken to different parts of the valley. Enjoy the energy from the center of the circle and then climb up the small steps on the sides of the terraces. Catch your breath before boarding the transport to drive down to the old colonial town of Maras (3,380mt /11,090ft.). Enjoy the spectacular views as we drive up the dirt narrow road to the Maras Salt Pans. The small salt pans are built on steep terraces along one side of a narrow valley which is nourished by the salt spring waters that surface from a subterranean stream in the mountain. There are about 3000 wells which are left to evaporate and are gathered by hand without any machinery. The first salt pans are believed to have been used by the Incas for trade. Then Spaniards spread the salt pans after the Incas and are now owned by several families. Taste the salty waters and enjoy the serenity and peaceful walk through the ponds. Thereafter, we will enjoy lunch in Urubamba. After lunch we will drive to Ollantaytambo to board our train to Aguas Calientes.
